Please introduce yourselves
Charlie Holden & Rowland Bennett, we've been in the music and events business collectively for almost 17 years now, and have worked across major labels, booking agencies, managed venues and most importantly promoted parties and events together, now all under the Day and Night Group!
We started working together on a new party concept in 2014 and became mates straight away. We're now producing over 50 shows a year in London.
Why did you decide to leave the major labels?
(Rowland): I worked for Sony Music at one of their London sub-label's called Relentless Records (21 seconds....!) first as a general label assistant and office tea boy, up to A&R team scout, and it's side arm artist management business, doing the day to day. I left mainly because the major world can be a very ruthless and a physically exhausting environment, so after a year doing that I travelled to south America before joining one of the largest independent music booking agencies Primary Talent International... and did my slug there for just shy of 3 years booking a roster of 60+ artists for the ROW (Rest of the World) outside of the USA.
What parties do you run?
Currently we promote Byday Bynight, Parable, House of Disco, and FourPoints concerts, alongside various non-music focussed and ad hoc events across the year. We also have a new day party brand starting next summer at 93 Feet East in Shoreditch, so we have a very busy 2019!
What are the music policies of each party?
Byday Bynight - Varies between House, Disco and Techno, we're at our busiest in the summer so we identify as much of a 'festival spectrum variation of sound' as we can.
House of Disco - Straight up Disco and Vocal House
Parable - The concept started with a John Talabot headline show at E1 earlier this year, and has followed with two back to back headline shows for Stephan Bodzin (live), Marc Romboy, Kiasmos, Christian Loffler (live) and Stimming (live) chronologically speaking. Our goal is to produce large scale shows for leading Electronic acts, and across the coming 12 months we have some very exciting Artists and locations to announce for the next events...watch this space!
Who are the acts to watch for you at the moment?
IOM November 2018 Spotify Playlist x By Day By Night
Charlie - This is really hard as I would love to list all of them! Off top of my head I think Andrem - Ascension and Patrice Baumel - Roar (Adana Twins remix) are on repeat at the moment and of course anything 'unreleased bicep' always tickles me ;)
Rowland - Oliver Koletzki - Subati (Andhim Remix) and the momentous curveball Mr. Job Jobse played at the Life & Death Tower afterparty at ADE last week; Bagarre - Le Gouffre (Yan Wagner Belgian Trip)
How do you split roles between you both?
We both have our own areas of the business, but as we both come from very similar backgrounds and experiences, we both tend to do a little bit of everything, but generally speaking its;
Charlie - Booking & programming all events - artist bookings, dealing with all venues, ticketing, agency partnerships and managing general operations.
Rowland - Business development, marketing, brand and sponsor partnerships, venue partnerships, ticketing and media partnerships. Finally, finances and accounts - the least sexy but vital and laborious stuff that happens being closed doors
Do you have any events coming up, please provide links that the IOM audience may be interested in.
The beginning and end of the year tend to be our quietest months in terms of scale, but we have 2 shows at Prince of Wales Brixton and 2 shows at Night Tales in Hackney with Maxxi Soundsystem, Tom Demac, Desert Sound Colony, Krywald & Farrer and more all lined up for to close 2018, and always some bigger showcases to keep your eyes peeled for in the coming months...
